Catch Ben Baptie at Rue Boyer as he walks you through the mixing of “Doomed” by Moses Sumney. In this series, Baptie breaks down how he and Moses shaped a sparse, emotionally intense track around a dynamic vocal performance using tape, dense reverbs, and careful automation to create depth, movement, and cohesion.
Working with little more than voice and synth, Baptie focuses on controlling the extremes of Sumney’s performance without flattening it. Different vocal registers are treated separately, with parallel processing and subtle dynamics control used to keep the performance present and intimate. Printing to tape adds density and helps solidify decisions early in the mix.
With no traditional rhythm section, movement comes from reverbs and ad-libs. Layered time-based effects create a sense of motion beneath the vocals. As the track develops, small details like textures, distortion, and automation help the minimal track feel expansive. The finished result is a mix that never loses sight of the emotional impact of the performance.
